About Us

Christ Child House is owned and operated by the Christ Child Society of Detroit, a charitable, non-profit organization of volunteers who have been helping disadvantaged youth throughout Michigan for over 100 years. For more information please go to http://www.ccsdetroit.org.

The Christ Child Society opened its original House in 1948 on Pallister Avenue in Detroit as a simple shelter for children whose families were experiencing temporary distress. In 1957 the Henry Ford family made a generous donation of land and a new House was built on Joy Road. Since opening its doors, Christ Child House has evolved dramatically as the needs of children and families in the community have changed. Over time, it became increasingly apparent that more and more children needed more than a warm meal and a safe place to sleep, as many entering the House were from neglectful and abusive homes. The agency has grown into a sophisticated treatment facility which is widely recognized for its outstanding services to youth in crisis. Currently, we are operating as a 25 bed residential treatment facility, providing for the increased needs our population, and providing intensive services to the younger age range of the boys we serve.

Many of the boys at the House have been removed from their familial homes due to neglect, and/or serious physical or emotional abuse. Often these children have failed in multiple foster home placements, adding to their emotional distress. “The House” becomes their place of refuge and healing, and hopefully, the start of a new life.

“The House” is nationally accredited by the prestigious Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children (COA). Licensed and contracted by the State of Michigan, Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing, the House provides services to boys of every race, creed and national origin.
